Excavating the hole

excavating the holeNow that you have decided on the size of Rainy Day Root Cellar that fits your needs, we will include a specific plan for your excavation contractor to follow. It is very important that the hole is dug precisely to the dimensions shown on your specific plan. Your cellar weighs tens of thousands of pounds. In order for the truck or crane to set your cellar most efficiently, your excavation contractor will have to be precise, both in final measurement and in making sure the entire hole is level. If the hole is too small, obviously the cellar won’t fit and more excavation will be required – resulting in costly downtime. If the hole is too large, it could create a situation that would require a larger and more expensive crane than otherwise needed, in order to have sufficient reaching capacity. Again, its not as bad as it sounds, just make sure the excavation contractor follows the plan. Slightly too big is better than slightly too small.

If you are not comfortable performing the excavation of your hole on your own, Rainy Day Root Cellars can find an excavation contractor in your local area and handle it in-house. This option, while we are happy to do it for you, will add additional costs to your cellar. It may seem intimidating, but in reality it is a pretty easy project for you to take care of on your own. We will supply you with the excavation plan – you will have to make sure that your contractor follows the plan. Just keep re-iterating – follow the plan – keep it level.
